About: Your Tutors

All tutors at The Beat Lab hold some kind of drumming and/or music qualifications. All tutors teach students how to read notation at The Beat Lab. All tutors hold a current working with children check.

Sally Wiggins

Sally has been performing on Drum Kit/ Percussion for various artists since the age of 13 including well known artists; Ben Folds at The Sydney Opera House 2009; and African/ Reggae Artist Afro Moses 2010/2011. As well as this, Sally has performed for many other local rock/ heavy rock/ folk/ jazz/ African and Afrobeat bands throughout the Illawarra, Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne. She currently does some drumming on drum kit and percussion for local Afro-band The Beatmeisters, for Pearl Noire’s Jazz/ Funk/ Soul/ Reggae band and for a folk fusion band called Swamp and Beats.

Sally started playing in bands learning the drum parts herself. She studied private tuition under Adam Dixon and Troy Lever throughout her schooling. As an adult she has studied under North Sydney drummer, Dave Goodman. She is currently studying under Mike Quigley while completing her Masters in Music Performance on Drum Kit at AMPA (Sydney).

Sally has attended drum clinics and workshops in Sydney and Melbourne with well renowned drummers including David Jones, Dom Famularo, Tommy Igoe, Thomas Lang, Stanton Moore, Tony Royster Junior, Marco Minneman, Lucious Borich, Jason Bittner, John Riley, Chris Coleman, Dave Elitch, Todd Sucherman and Greg Bissonette. Sally has also spent some years studying African drumming under local teachers Damion Stirling and Catur Rasta Gong and international teachers Master Mamady Keita, Epizo Bangoura and Yacou M’Baye.

Throughout her drumming education and career Sally has also been involved in many musical productions held at the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre, The Arcadians Theatre and the University of Wollongong. The productions she has been involved in include: Man is Man (composer and drummer), Godspell (drums), You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown (drums), Back to The Eighties (drums), Little Women (drums/ percussion), Cabaret (drums), Jesus Christ Superstar (drums/ percussion), Tick Tick Boom (drums) and Peer Gynt (composer/ Drummer). She was the conductor for the Mens Percussion group at The Illawarra Grammar School in her final years of schooling, performed on Drum Kit at ENCORE at The Sydney Opera House in 2003 and also held the leadership position at her high school entitled ‘Music Senior Leader’.

Sally is a Distinction Graduate of Wollongong University in Music/ Sound/ Composition and Production, completing her degree in 2008 and is currently studying a Masters of Music Performance Degree on Drum Kit at AMPA University in Sydney.

As much as Sally loves to perform she gets so much enjoyment out of sharing her knowledge with others. Sally has been a professional and well-respected teacher in Wollongong/ Sydney for over 10 years. Teaching both drum kit and African Drums for a variety of companies including: The Academy of Music and Drama, Thirroul; Elemental Grooves, Wollongong (performer and teacher); Afrobeat, Sydney (performer and assistant facilitator) and The Music Bus, Wollongong/ Sydney (Teacher and Marketer). Sally has also been a loyal Drum Kit Tutor for St Mary’s and Corpus Christi High School during these years but she is now solely focusing on her own studio, The Beat Lab. Sally is experienced in preparing students for their Wollongong High Auditions and has a high success rate. Sally also enjoys guiding drummers through their HSC preparation for music. Upon request, she can prepare students for Rock and Pop Drum Examinations through Trinity College or CPM Drum Kit through AMEB. However only recommends drum examinations in special circumstances.

Sally teaches at the studio Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday evenings in Studio 1.

Finn Ryan

The Beat Lab is excited to welcome back drummer Finn Ryan to the team in 2017! Finn helped Sally out with some teaching at The Beat Lab in 2015 and he is back again with even more to offer!

Finn attended Wollongong High School of the Performing Arts and the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music. He was then accepted into the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and completed his Bachelor in Jazz Performance on Drum Kit in 2015.

He has studied extensively with legendary Australian drummers Simon Barker and Tony Buck of The Necks. In 2016 Finn traveled to America to take lessons with two of the most important session drummers of all time, Bernard Purdie and James Gadson.

Finn has recorded on over 20 different CD’s and currently enjoys a busy performance and touring schedule playing in a range of different styles across the country, including Jazz, Pop RnB, HipHop and Funk/Rock. As well as having ample teaching experience at both primary and secondary school levels, having taught across a range of different schools in Sydney.

Finn Ryan teaches at the studio on Thursday evenings in Studio 1.

Associate Tutor: Caitlin Emmerich

Caitlin began drumming during her primary school years, this is now her 11th year of drumming. During this time she has been part of the Albion Park Anglican Church Music Team and has also spent a period of time playing for St Therese Catholic Church in Corrimal, on Drum Kit. When Caitlin went on a Cruise Ship vacation with her family at the beginning of 2015 the in house band asked her to drum for them! They loved her drumming so much that they asked her back again the next night! Caitlin is currently a regular drummer at her local church.

So well run…
Sam only started the drums 6 months ago and played in his first showcase yesterday…we couldnt have been prouder..thankyou Caitlin for your patience and Sally for being so welcoming each week.

As well as achieving her Black Band (highest level of the drum fundamentals) through The Beat Lab Syllabus while learning drumming with Sally Wiggins, Caitlin also spent some of her high school years studying at the Conservatorium of Music in Wollongong playing and performing in Jazz Combo Groups and studying drum kit with tutors Alex Masso and Fabian Hevia. She also holds a Certificate with Credit in Drum Kit through the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB).

Caitlin has been teaching at The Beat Lab for over 3 years now and holds a high level of respect from her current, enthusiastic and very dedicated students. She is a caring teacher who will competently guide her students through the fundamentals of drumming making sure that her students are confident with their theory and technique whilst keeping her lessons fun and inspiring at the same time.

Caitlin is at the studio Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings in Studio 2 (upstairs).

Can you please let Caitlin know that Simon’s school music teacher could not believe that Simon has only been playing drums for 1 year. He said he has come so far and developed some great skills in such a short time. – Emma

Associate Tutor: Joe Rosetto

Joe has been playing drums since the age of 11 performing in bands covering styles such as pub classics, jazz, funk, groove and punk rock.

Some of the bands that he has played for include The Escalators, The Great Awake, Raised as Wolves, as well as a musical production of Hairspray.

Playing in his current band Raised as Wolves has allowed Joe to gain experiences in areas such as touring with a band, recording and supporting acts such as The Living End, The Bennies, Frenzal Rhomb, Clowns and Vices.

Joe is currently in his second year of a Bachelor of performance majoring in Drum Kit at The Academy of Music and Performing Arts (AMPA). the university recently put togther a short video about Joe and so to find out more check this out:

Sally: $40.15, Finn: $40.15, Caitlin: $35.75, Joe: $35.75

All costs include GST. All lessons are 30 minutes in length. No partner or group lessons are currently available. Lessons are for students aged 8 years and above. Adults are welcome.

Lesson cost is at its current level because our time is now in such high demand. Sally also needs to cover the cost of being in a professional venue that includes 2 studios, 2 waiting areas, cooling, heating, a toilet and coffee/ tea making facilities for parents. All studios are fully equipped with 2 drum kits, a stereo and hand percussion.

Why The Beat Lab has to charge GST? Unfortunately the government states that, although we provide education: Supplies that are taxable include the supply of private tuition by a freelance tutor to a student.
